Canon: Dangan Ronpa
Canon Point: After finding the body in chapter 4.
Species: Human

History: here.
Appearance: here.

Personality: The easiest way to start talking about Makoto Naegi is to say that - especially compared to the rest of the cast in the game, who are all pretty.. special.. - he is very normal. Everyone else in Hope Academy has a special talent of sorts and they are all pretty unique personality-wise or even clothing-wise in some cases, and compared to that Naegi would probably come across as pretty bland. He dresses the way any teen guy might and his personality doesn't particularly stand out in a big group of people, especially if said group of people is the loud and eccentric group he finds himself in in canon.

But that's exactly the point of it all, because Naegi is so normal he is the one who more or less keeps the group together in a way. He has quite some common sense, again especially compared to certain (or even most) members of the class, and is able to think things through logically even if he might not be as smart as Kirigiri or Togami. In the end he is always the one who keeps the investigation of the dead bodies going and he is also the one who pieces all the clues and evidence together during the classroom trials. When the others are discussing the murders and crime scenes he is the one who points out the flaws in what they're saying by presenting evidene and the like - 'you've got that wrong!' In the end he is also the one who pieces everything together to show everyone how exactly the crime happened and points out the true culprit to keep everyone else from dying and the culprit being allowed to live on and be free. This doesn't mean he's a genius though, not by far since there's no way he would be able to get through the trials as well as he usually does if it wasn't for mostly Kirigiri and sometimes Togami's help (although the latter also just tends to make it worse at times). It's more just that he has the ability to think things through normally (aka with common sense) and logically. It probably helps that most people stuck in Hope Academy aren't too bright, so in that sense he stands out a little more.

So why aren't the other smart ones (the few of them, at least) helping out with the whole 'piecing things together so everyone won't die' deal? It's mostly since Naegi doesn't only have a fair amount of common sense compared to most of his classmates, but he's also quite nice compared to most of them. Whereas most of Hope Academy's students are fairly self-centered or just not too social in general, Naegi is a pretty nice guy. He isn't nice in the sense that he will just tolerate everything (quite the opposite, he makes snarky comments in his head from time to time at the weirdness or assholish habits of some of the others), but he's nice in the sense that he does manage to get along with practically everyone, no matter what the person is like. He doesn't mind listening to other people's problems and even helping them out with them (like how he tells Chihiro that maybe he should go train with Mondo, even with the disasterous consequences it ends up having) and even saves everyone during the trials again and again. He promises to help out Maizono during the first chapter, even though - while he doesn't realise - she's just setting him up to take the fall for the murder she's about to commit. He doesn't even blame the people committing murders, saying it's all Monobear's fault rather than their fault. It doesn't take much to befriend Naegi or to get him to do something for you as long as you're not being ridiculous about it, honestly.

There's no doubt Naegi has a hard time during the game with the people around him dying one by one, and even more importantly people actually murdering each other around him as well. The ery first blow was already difficult on him, with the girl closest to him who he promised to protect and help out dying at first and then hearing that she was actually trying to set him up during the trial. But even after that and various of his classmates dying and killing each other, Naegi doesn't give up. He's not someone to give in easily, but rather someone to fight until the very end - he refuses to give into despair and instead tries to keep on hoping, and even tries to bring back hope to others. He's the one who's trying to keep the memory of the ones who died before alive too, as Kirigiri puts it: "You’re a person... who can get over things. A person who can get over the death of his friends and continue walking forward." And to which Naegi himself says: "That’s why... I will always keep them with me. I can’t get over any of it... Maizono-san’s or Kuwata-kun’s deaths... I will always keep them with me. I will keep going forward holding everyone’s memories forever!!"

So to sum it up? He really is just your average normal guy who doesn't particularly stand out.. but at the same thing, that's exactly what the group needs - someone nice and normal to keep things in balance and to keep hope alive.

Abilites: Nothing in particular. He was admitted to Hope's Academy as having 'Super High School Level Good Luck' but even that is debatable since ending up there would actually only happen to a really unlucky person.

Other: N/A.

SAMPLES
First Person: here!

Third Person: .. The bright sun. It was the first thing he noticed when he opened his eyes. It normally wouldn't be that strange of a sight, but inside Hope Academy it was a sight that was literally never seen - he was sure there hadn't been any replica of the sun in any of the rooms in there. And suddenly waking up and not being sure what had happened for him to be knocked out was pretty normal for the boy as well after the other times, but at least back then he had woken up in the school. This most definitely wasn't inside the school, especially as he sat up in the chair and looked at the houses around him. Green grass, a blue sky-- no, there was no way this was inside that school. But that meant that somehow he got out..? No, there was no way that was true either, that bear wouldn't suddenly have let them go out of nowhere. No dout this must have been another one of his tricks somehow for some reason, maybe he was trying to stop the trial..

He completely got off the chair now, feeling the grass below his sneakers. The surprise at his new surroundings had left him virtually breathless, and all he could do was staring around him with a blank yet surprised expression, unable to try and think up what this all was about in full detail. After a minute or two of standing there though he was able to regain some reasonable sense of thought. If he was suddenly here, then the first priority should be finding out if one of the others had been brought here too. At least then they could work together to try and figure this out for everyone's sake..

The boy drew in a deep breath, starting with the name that came most natural. ".. Kirigiri-san?" When there was no answer (even after he looked around) he continued naming people off the list in his head. "Asahina-san?" No answer either. The others he was a lot less eager about, but even so, seeing them right now would be pretty good.. and it was important to keep them save too after all, no matter what. "Fukawa-san? .. Hagakure-kun?" .. Well, the last possibility-- "Togami-kun?"

There wasn't any answer, not to any of them. Was it because he wasn't calling out loudly enough or were they really here? The only other thing he could think of calling out wasn't to anyone he wanted to see, but.. he frowned as he looked up at the sky, as if there was someone there waiting for him. "Monobear..! If this is any of your doing, please explain yourself!" Even though it did sound fairly determined and maybe even a little tough (he had grown some backbone over time, he practically had to) he was actually nearly shaking on his legs at the thought of being here all alone in a situation he knew nothing about.

But as even that gave no result at all, he knew the only thing to do (after swallowing thickly and admitting the fact he was all alone to himself) was to explore. Just think of it as another thing from the school, find evidence, solve this..

And so he gathered up all his courage and determination to walk towards the house behind him instead.
